Frequently Asked Questions
How is printing cost calculated?
For standard KDP paperbacks, there's a fixed cost per book (e.g. $1.00) plus a per-page cost (e.g. $0.012). Hardcovers have higher fixed costs.
Does Amazon take 40% or 60%?
Amazon keeps 40% of the list price as their distribution fee. You (the author) get 60% of the list price, MINUS printing costs. This is why short, low-priced books often make very little profit.
Why is Expanded Distribution lower?
If you enable Expanded Distribution, Amazon takes an additional 20% (so you only get 40% of list price minus print costs), because they have to share revenue with other retailers like Barnes & Noble.
